Artist Ilya Kabakov once said: ''A house is thus a memory device, evoking memories and summoning phantasmagoric entities. The subconscious is also populated with ghosts. Not just memories, but also things we have forgotten, which are 'stored' there. The soul is a dwelling. By remembering houses and rooms, we learn to look inside ourselves''. These words served as foundation for Fernando Rubio's El tiempo entre nosotros [The time among us], the second part of a trilogy that begins with Cuando éramos chicos (When we were children) and ends with Y todo lo demás [And everything else].
El tiempo entre nosotros is about a man who decides to abandon his environment to occupy an abstract and recognizable space, turning the relationship he has with strangers into an aesthetic event while exploring the possibility of being someone else. For five straight days, he will talk or write from this new place, with the almost constant presence of the public. He will tell a story and permanently and repetitively reflect upon the place where he belonged, the different ways to leave it behind and observe it, the passing of time and events and how they mediate our decisions and transformations. When night falls and he is left alone, he will have a radio to connect with the outer world and talk -if he wishes to do so- with potential listeners.
Those who wish to enter the house and contemplate this scene must make a reservation for one of the five available daily shifts (information will be required as well as a photograph, so that the man can become acquainted with the visitors before and after their participation). Also, visitors will get to share many different situations with him in the context of a changing schedule of activities and leisure —at any time during the day; no previous enrollment being required— such as witnessing dialogues with intellectuals, watching movies or listening to music.
Rubio's idea consists of disarticulating a person's habits and turning the gesture into a work of art, to reflect upon the way we inhabit time and space, emphasizing the bonds we establish with our surroundings and the potential derivatives. By exhibiting change as a way of acknowledging what has been left behind, he tries to recover the memory of our transformations.
