Throughout her practice, Abramović has been blurring the lines between the observer and the observed as they pertain to performance. Traditionally the performer would be observed and the public would be the observers. Switching those roles and asking the public to participate in the action and therefore to be the observed, provides an opportunity to have a personal experience in a long durational performance.
The artist developed the Abramović Method to give the public the opportunity to be free from the constant distractions of our modern world and to be quiet and connected with the present moment.
The exercises presented during this workshop are part of the Abramović Method. Participants will stay in the space for as long as they want, allowing them time to be with themselves and to experience the calmness and the rare feeling of being free from responsibility.
If the public can honor their commitment to themselves and remain focused and internal for this period of time, the simplicity of these exercises allows for the clarity and connection that we often lack in our lives.

Marina Abramović 1946, Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
She lives and works in New York, United States.
She has pioneered in performance as a visual art form, creating some of the most important works of this discipline. Using her own body as subject and medium, she has challenged her physical and mental limits on several occasions with the aim of exploring the relation between the artist and the audience, in her quest for a mutual emotional and spiritual transformation. From 1975 to 1988, Abramović and the German artist Ulay performed together in such works as AAA-AAA; Relation in Time; Breathing in/Breathing out; Rest Energy, and Great Wall Walk, which marks the separation of this duo. She returned to her solo performances in 1989. She has presented her work at major institutions in the United States and Europe, including the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven, Netherlands, 1985); Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France, 1990); Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin, Germany, 1993); and the Museum of Modern Art (Oxford, England, 1995). She has also participated in many large-scale international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (Venice, Italy, 1976 and 1997) and dOCUMENTA (Kassel, Germany, 1977, 1982 and 1992). Recent performances include The House With The Ocean View (Sean Kelly Gallery, New York, 2002), and Seven Easy Pieces at Guggenheim Museum (New York, United States, 2005). In 2010, Abramović had her first major retrospective, The Artist is Present (Museum of Modern Art, New York, United States), she presented a 700-hour-long performance where she welcomed each visitor seating on a chair while looking deeply into their eyes, this took place from the opening until the last day of the exhibition. In 2014 she decided to put her resistance to the test once again in a piece titled 512 Hours (Serpentine Gallery, London, England), throughout a three-month period she invited each viewer to leave all his belongings at the entrance, and let himself go in a sensory experience. She was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale for the video installation and performance Balkan Baroque; the Austrian Commander Cross in 2008 for her contribution to Art History; and multiple honorary doctorates. In 2012, she founded the Marina Abramović Institute, a platform for immaterial and long durational work to create new possibilities for collaboration among thinkers of all fields.
